The Rallye Monte-Carlo opens the World Rally Championship season each late January — and it is the most misunderstood event on this site for a simple reason: the rally barely happens in Monaco. Since 2022 the service park and rally headquarters sit in Gap, in the Hautes-Alpes, with the podium ceremony on Casino Square. Where you land depends entirely on which part you are attending.
Which airport for the rally stages vs the Monaco podium?
For the stages and service park: the rally is centred on Gap, about two hours northwest of the coast. The closest usable airports for private aviation are Marseille Provence (MRS) — roughly 1h30 by road from Gap — and Grenoble Alpes–Isère. Gap–Tallard airfield (LFNA) sits next to the service park but is limited to light aircraft and daylight VFR operations — usable for small props, not for jets.
For the podium and Monaco events: land at Nice as usual and helicopter across. The ceremonial finish and podium on Casino Square happen Sunday afternoon — a same-day trip works: land midday at Nice, helicopter in, watch the podium, fly home in the evening.
Team logistics split the difference: principals and sponsors base in Monaco or Cannes and helicopter to stage viewing points where possible; several stages have helicopter-accessible zones arranged with the organisers — this is coordinated, not casual.
How much does it cost?
January is low season on the Riviera — the best charter availability and pricing of the year:

Winter adds one operational factor: weather. Alpine stages mean fog and icing risk at inland airports; Nice on the coast is dramatically more reliable in January than Gap-side fields. If the forecast looks marginal, land at Nice and drive up — a boring answer that saves the weekend.
What is the realistic itinerary for a spectator?
The cleanest play for a first-timer: arrive Thursday evening into Nice, helicopter or car to Monaco, take the ceremonial start at Casino Square, then either follow a stage or two as a spectator Friday/Saturday (organised access zones exist but require planning — stages are on closed mountain roads) and return to Monaco for Sunday's podium.
If your interest is the racing more than the Principality, base in Gap itself and fly into Marseille. If it is the glamour — Casino Square, the yacht parties, the Automobile Club de Monaco hospitality — land at Nice and stay in Monaco.
